Instead of becoming a bank clerk, he became an industrial mechanic – alumnus Daniel Holland explains in an interview why he chose the latter path and what awakened his ambition.
Daniel is one of ten Leipzig JOBLINGE alumni that we are introducing on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of JOBLINGE gAG Leipzig.
How did you become an industrial mechanic?
At first I didn’t know the profession at all – I wanted to become a bank clerk.
Before I applied, JOBLINGE recommended that I get to know other professions through internships.
I then did an internship as a production mechanic at BMW, which I really enjoyed!
How did you know that it should be this profession?
During my internship, I quickly realized: “This is the job I want to do.” I wasn’t actually that talented with my hands and didn’t think I would be suited to such a job. But during the internship, I managed the tasks well and now I even find them easy.
My trainer at the time also motivated me to stick with it and do the apprenticeship.
He was my role model and awakened my ambition, I thought: “I want to be able to do what he can do just as well.”
What do you particularly enjoy about your job?
The apprenticeship is so varied from a technical point of view!
I’m currently working at BMW in the press shop as a plant operator.
There’s always something new here, new faults, new tools, new components – it’s great fun!
It’s so interesting to see how the plant works.
In a large company like BMW, you also have the opportunity to keep learning and developing.
Why is it important to do an apprenticeship?
It awakens ambition, at least in me.
My goal at the time: I wanted to get my life under control and gain experience.
Every profession also entails specialization, which opens up other possibilities.
At the same time, it’s important to find out beforehand whether a job is really for you.
The internship at BMW ultimately showed me that the trade suited me and was the right path for me.
Thank you very much for the interview and I wish you continued success and happiness in your career!
