JOBLINGE alumna: Deborah Ziegel – veterinary assistant

“I’ve found a golden treasure,” says Deborah Ziegel.
She is a veterinary assistant and one of ten Leipzig JOBLINGE alumni who we are introducing on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of JOBLINGE gAG Leipzig.
In this interview, she tells us how she found her dream job – and how she has developed since completing her training.

How did you get to your apprenticeship?

It was a difficult path, it took me a long time.
The profession of veterinary assistant is very much in demand – I only ever got rejections.
Then I took part in JOBLINGE: I was able to do longer internships in various veterinary practices, gain experience and make contacts.
In the end, I was able to do an entry-level qualification, from which I was then taken on in the second year of my apprenticeship.

How did you know it was going to be this profession?

I always knew that I wanted to work with animals.
I also always knew what my long-term plan was: to have my own animal sanctuary.
To prepare myself for this in the best possible way, I spoke to various experts about possible training paths before starting my training.
The recommendation?
“Become a veterinary assistant!”
I also got a taste of other professions through internships and can only confirm this: Being a veterinary assistant is my absolute dream job.
The profession is simply in my blood!

What do you particularly enjoy about your job?

I really enjoy discharging a patient as cured.
Especially if it was a critical case.
Saving another life that would never have had a chance is the best reward.
It’s also great to accompany the animals from an early age: Seeing them grow up, develop and master their lives.

I can also continue my training in various areas.
For example, I have completed further training as a specialist advisor for animal nutrition and another course in cat-friendly handling – which trains me to handle cats sensitively.

Why is it important to do an apprenticeship?

Training paves the way for gaining a foothold in working life.
And also to get ahead professionally.
With my training, I can find a job anywhere, in any country, and earn money!
My current boss has also given me the chance to do a lot of further training and I’m now even doing a second course on the side – as a dog trainer.
I wouldn’t have thought that possible back then.
But once you’re firmly established in your career, you can always develop further.

I have set up a new practice in the Leipzig area together with my boss.
We have a mobile cat practice and also do animal behavior therapy.
I have really found a golden treasure!

Thank you very much for the interview and I wish you continued success and happiness in your career!

JOBLINGE Impact Area – the PLAN A numbers!

PLAN A has been impressively successful – several thousand young people have already registered since 2023! But what’s behind these figures? Here we explain how PLAN A reaches young people who would otherwise fall through the cracks and the role our innovative approach plays in this. 5.000 young people registered with PLAN A since 2023! More and more young people have no training and are increasingly difficult to reach. Around 628,000 young people are not in education, training or employment and remain lost in the school-to-work transition as they are difficult for the system to reach (so-called NEETs). However, PLAN A addresses young people where they actually are – on the street or on social media. Because at JOBLINGE, our primary goal is to help as many young people as possible into training and the world of work in the long term. To achieve this goal, we take various approaches
